Waleed's Questions

So for some odd reason the forums website is down at the moment. Posting questions below - apologies for them being in random order - all questions be lumped up in to either of need, return, and measurement!:

1. Project in Hyderabad vs. Sukkur. While we are providing computers to Hyderabad, we are indirectly providing equipment to Sukkur where the major impact will be. Can we not conduct site visits etc. in Sukkur? If so, it would be more interesting to evaluate the project and I assume the impact will be higher.

2. FESF had revenues of PKR32m for last year - is this primarily from donations or do they earn money from their operations too. Please have a look at this and last year's financials - see how much cash they have in the account and where the money has been coming in from and going out to.

3. Since FESF is running similar centers in Hyderabad, Karachi and Lahore, would be good to have a standalone structure in terms of running costs, number of computers, teachers, students, for each center. This would not only help in evaluating impact for Sukkur but also help us for other projects Very Happy

4. Who will pay for the operating costs of the center in Sukkur? How much cash does FESF have to cover these expenses?

5. What is the curriculum ? Is the same curriculum taught across all centers?

6. Success in Karachi,, Lahore etc. has been based on the fact that those trained have gone on to get jobs.. will the same apply for Sukkur?

7. Is there any such similar facility in sukkur? How about other NGOs catering to the deaf in Sukkur/Hyderabad? How many computers? How many students? How is the course structured? How many deaf people in the area? Does it only cater to the deaf? Can they get in other people and train them in computers? What will the utilization of the computers be over the day? Will they only be used a few hours of the day or throughout?

8. Electricity situation? Do they need a UPS/generator? What about facilities - do they have enough space to house the computers in Sukkur?

9. Need to look at metrics for Karachi,Lahore, Hyderabad - how succesful have the computer labs been? Hoe many people have been trained? How many have jobs? How does this translate to Sukkur?

10. Who teaches at the centers? Does FESF have teachers for Sukkur?

11. Budget diligence needs to be carried out - is there anyway to lower the costs?

12. Cost/beneficiary and social return metrics? How will we measure social return? How many deaf people in Sukkur? How many can we expect to target?

13. How is the security situation in Sukkur - will the computers be stolen/vandalized? What about maintenance costs - will they have some IT guy nearby?

14. Some computers have already been donated by J&J. Can't we just get some other companies to donate?

Regards,
Waleed

Call attended by: Ali, Qasim & Khurram

Dear Team,

Ali, Qasim and myself had a relatively productive call over the last hour. Since only three of us could make it, we suggest that we set up another call next week to discuss the project in greater depth.

However in the meantime, Owais, perhaps you can liaise with Daniel in relation to the below suggestions. If we can get a response before next week, then I think we will be in a good position to either plough ahead in much greater depth into the project or determine that perhaps this project is not too suitable for ADP. With that said, please find below the proposed next steps:

1)First and foremost we must impress on Daniel and FESF during future correspondence that ADP is serious about swiftly evaluating this project, one way or the other. It is important from a reputation perspective that we give FESF an answer as soon as possible and we should let Daniel know this.
2)Second, and perhaps just as importantly, as per our latest review of the FESF website, it seems that the organization has already setup a computer lab in Sukkur. Therefore, we were not clear what FESF is now looking for ADP to fund and why.

In light of the above Owais, we suggest that you liaise with Daniel this week and clarify the following:

1) Has the Sukkur computer lab already been set up? If so:
a) How did FESF finance the lab?
b) What does FESF want ADP to fund now?
c) If FESF still wants ADP to finance upgradation of the Hyderabad lab, what will the older computers from Hyderabad be used for now?
2) Request FESF to share the 2009-10 audited financials.

Based on the answers to the above questions, we think the project team will be in a position to decide to either continue to evaluate the project in greater depth next week and come up with more questions for FESF, OR decide that this project might not fit ADP's selection criteria.

Let me also take the opportunity to propose a call next Friday Nov 12th at 11 PM (Beijing time)/ 11 am (EDT), 7 pm (UAE time)/ 8 pm (Pakistan time). If anyone is unavailable at the above time slot, kindly propose an alternative at the earliest. Let's try to settle on a time before this weekend is over.

Best,

Khurram, Ali & Qasim
