Fiza Shah from DIL sent this today. They would like us to consider supporting temporary schools for displaced Kashmiri Kids in Islamabad. It's a great service, there's a clear need for it and we've had a good relationship with DIL. On the flip side, it may not be the most critical need right now while people's lives are in danger, and it is clearly a temporary relief measure.
Would welcome initial thoughts on whether there is an appetite for considering this.

DIL Sets Up Temporary School for Earthquake Affectees
October 27, 2005
Developments In Literacy (DIL) is setting up its first camp school at Lake View Motel in Islamabad, where approximately 500 earthquake evacuees from Muzaffarabad and Bagh District in Azad Kashmir have been temporarily housed. The building was to be demolished, but in light of the urgent housing need it has been left standing for now. Another 500 evacuees are expected to arrive at the facility in a few days.
One hundred primary school students have been enrolled and this number could double as the new evacuees arrive. There is popular support among the residents for a school, and many teachers can be hired from within the camp population.
The camp authorities have given DIL a hall for setting up the school. The facility is not the best, but DIL is attempting to create the best environment possible under the circumstances. In addition to hiring teachers, we are purchasing furniture, books, stationary, teaching aids and sports equipment. DIL is also planning to provide school uniforms, shoes, socks and warm clothing for the students as they do not even have a change of clothing.
Because there are more children than can be accommodated in the hall at one time, double shifts are being considered. Some older boys asked for books as they wanted to study for their college exams. However, DIL’s attention this week is on primary school students who account for the majority of kids at the camp. Next, we will consider the needs of the secondary school and college-level students. DIL is hoping to set up a play group if extra space can be provided. A doctor has been assigned by the authorities, and DIL will also try to arrange for psychological counseling at the facility.
DIL plans to open more such camp school in Islamabad in the coming weeks. DIL is also planning to establish a permanent school project in Azad Kashmir.
Adding some normalcy to these children’s fractured lives at this time is critical. A regulated schedule and a warm, welcoming school environment will play an important role in helping the students recover from the extreme trauma and deep loss that they have suffered. |

FYI. ADP ended up declining this project since we decided to support other relief efforts via EHD, Edhi etc. Please let me know if you have questions. |
